SOIL works in Haiti to increase access to climate-positive sanitation services using a groundbreaking circular-economy model that simultaneously improves public health, food security, economic development, and ecological resiliency. SOIL’s sanitation service currently provides over 2,200 families in northern Haiti with safely-managed sanitation and plans to expand this to 10% of the population of Cap-Haitien in the coming years. SOIL is seeking a Research and Innovation Director to provide support to our team by developing and executing a comprehensive research strategy for our organization.


  • The Research and Innovation Director is responsible for leading, directing, planning, and managing SOIL’s research program under the supervision of the Executive Director. They will supervise the Research team, manage external research partnerships and oversee the development and implementation of new and existing research projects to serve the strategic goals of the organization.  As a member of SOIL’s Executive team, the Research and Innovation Director participates in monthly meetings and annual planning exercises to set the strategic trajectory for the organization.
  • The Research and Innovation Director will be an experienced leader and motivator, with a record of successful change management, building and developing teams, establishing a strong data culture as organizational value, an extensive track record of successful service and project delivery and be able to demonstrate innovative practice. The Research and Innovation Director will bring current knowledge and future vision to leverage rigorous research in operational improvements and support for the organization’s mission and vision.

Primary tasks include:

Supervise the Research team members and oversee their research and special projects.

  • Connect with research team members on a weekly or biweekly basis to discuss challenges, new ideas, and other relevant information.
    Draft an annual research strategy and budget to identify, plan, and oversee new research and innovation projects based on team feedback, personal observation, technological advancements, etc.
    Lead monthly research team check-ins, manage and approve incoming research requests, assign research projects to research team members, generate new research ideas and proposals, and vet other research team members’ ideas and proposals.
    Serve as the SOIL point of contact for all research-related external partners and consultants.

Serve as lead on research projects performed in collaboration with the Container-Based Sanitation Alliance (CBSA). Some current examples include:

  • Coordinating SOIL’s participation in carbon credit certification initiatives occurring at the CBSA-wide level.
    Collaborating with partners creating sanitation planning tools for the sector to ensure that SOIL’s data is being used to populate these tools.
    Coordinating SOIL’s participation in any other upcoming collaborative research initiatives.

Work in collaboration with partners to guide financial modeling and analysis work with the goal of making appropriate financial data accessible to relevant SOIL staff as well as external stakeholders

  • Work with operational teams and external consultants to ensure that SOIL’s financial model is regularly updated and accessible to the operations and development teams for planning purposes.

Identify funding for research projects and assist the Development team in producing proposals. Share insights from the Research team at an organizational level.

  • Work with the Development team to actively seek out funding sources for planned research initiatives.
    As requested, provide the Development team with project outcome data, photos, and impact metrics to be used for funder reports and donor outreach.
    Report directly to the COO and Executive Director regarding challenges, new ideas, and other relevant information on a weekly basis.
    Participate in Executive and Operational team meetings and calls.
    Support the other directors in making organizational decisions.
    Participate in the development of long-term strategic plans for the organization.
    Participate in other meetings as requested.

Present results of analyses, pilots/tests, as well as any associated recommendations from the Research and Innovation team back to the relevant members of the SOIL Operational Team.

  • Organize all of your files in relevant Dropbox and Google Drive folders.
    Work with the COO and Research Team to ensure streamlined communications between the Research and Operational teams and to present operationally relevant outcomes in a timely and accessible manner.
    Present research at international conferences and participate in drafting papers for submission to peer-reviewed journals to disseminate findings from SOIL’s research.
    Other activities that may be mutually agreed upon


This post reports to the Executive Director and works closely with the Chief Operating Officer.


  • A Master’s or Ph.D. in a field relevant to SOIL’s areas of implementation.
    Deep experience in managing and tackling the challenges associated with data collection, analysis, and integration in challenging contexts.
    Proven project management skill, including needs analysis, planning, and implementation.
    Strong communication skills with the ability to interface with Finance, Operations, Development and IT teams.
    At least 3 years of management or mentorship experience.
    Experience with co-creating and publishing peer reviewed research results.
    Professional proficiency in English and French or, preferably, Haitian Creole
